Silverwing

Silverwing is a book about a bat named Shade, runt of the Silverwing colony, who manages to get his home burned down by the owls, main enemy of the bats. Shade looked at the sun, breaking the laws of nature in doing so. The colony migrates early, but Shade is separated from the others in a storm and ends up on an island. There he meets the Brightwing bat Marina, and they both set off to find Shade's colony. They meet with some huge cannibal bats called Goth and Throbb, but soon realize the danger to both them and the Silverwing colony. Goth becomes the sworn enemy of Shade, and their battles continue on in the sequels Sunwing and Firewing. Shade ends up becoming a legend, the hero that is spoken of in stories.

How is Tarzan Similar to Silverwing?

Tarzan of the Apes is similar in some ways to the book Silverwing, by Kenneth Oppel. For one, in Silverwing there is a runty bat called Shade who doesn't seem to fit in. This is the same with Tarzan, who feels small and puny in the presence of his mighty ape brothers. In Silverwing, Shade also meets a female bat named Marina who becomes his friend and companion. In Tarzan, he finds a human female and becomes friends with her. In both books the story is made up of completely or mostly animals. In both books Humans play a part. And in both books, the hero is struggling for survival.
